Three habitats, an hour from town.
Arusha National Park packs the Momella lakes, the Ngurdoto crater and the forested lower slopes of Mount Meru into a compact area close to the city. It is the best day trip in the region, and one of the few parks in Tanzania where you are allowed to explore on foot with an armed ranger.
Because there are no lion resident in the park, guided walking is permitted. Walking among giraffe, buffalo and waterbuck changes the scale of a safari completely, and it is a good acclimatisation day before a Kilimanjaro or Meru climb.
The alkaline Momella lakes each carry a different mineral content and therefore a different colour. Canoeing is permitted on the small lakes, usually within sight of grazing giraffe and, in clear weather, with Kilimanjaro on the horizon.
