Tarangire is where northern Tanzania's elephants concentrate in the dry season, drawn to the permanent water of the Tarangire River. Add ancient baobabs, dense birdlife and a fraction of the Serengeti's vehicle traffic and it becomes one of the most rewarding stops on the circuit — and one of the most frequently skipped.
Between July and October, herds of several hundred elephant gather along the river. It is common to sit with a single group for an hour as it crosses in front of the vehicle. The park also holds fringe-eared oryx, lesser kudu and gerenuk, dry-country species you will not reliably find in Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
Over 500 recorded species make Tarangire one of the strongest birding parks in the country. Yellow-collared lovebird and ashy starling are near-endemics here, and the swamps in the south hold storks, herons and raptors in numbers through the green season.
