Ways to travel

More than one kind of safari.

Any of these can be built into the itineraries above, or become the trip itself.

Walking safari

A welcome break from days in a vehicle. On foot you stalk wildlife, read tracks and meet people, at a completely different pace. The walking areas of the Serengeti were effectively unvisited for fifty years and are still pristine and fragile, which is why access is controlled and why we keep it that way.

Camping safari

The closest you get to the bush: a tent on a campsite in or beside the park, a cook travelling with you, and the sound of the place at night. By the time you come back in with the sun going down and a lion calling somewhere out there, ordinary life is a long way off. It is also the most affordable way to travel.

Cultural safari

Tanzania has more than 120 tribes and every one has its own culture. Combining wildlife with time among people changes the trip entirely. There are far more places worth going than any itinerary can hold, so we build this around your time and your budget rather than a fixed route.

The wildebeest migration

Between January and March the herds are on the short grass of the Ndutu and Salei plains in the southern Serengeti, calving. Newborns draw predators, so this is when lion and cheetah kills are most often seen. After that the herds move north and the cycle begins again.

Balloon safari

The balloon fills and sways, the crew hold the basket level, and then you lose touch with the ground and become part of the dawn. The sky goes from purple to pink, the sun clears the horizon and floods the plains with gold. For an hour you have no say in where you go: however good the pilot, he goes where the wind goes. Booked in advance, as an add-on to any Serengeti night.

Birdwatching safari

Timed to the arrival of the herds in the central Serengeti, when the birds are in full breeding plumage and the long-tailed widows and the black, red and yellow bishops are displaying and chasing each other across the grass. Northern Tanzania's diversity is exceptional and badly under-watched.
