Ngorongoro is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world: a twenty-kilometre bowl with walls six hundred metres high and a floor that supports around 25,000 large animals year-round. Because the wildlife largely stays inside, a single day on the crater floor can deliver more species than a week elsewhere.
The crater is one of the few places in Tanzania with a realistic chance of the full big five in one drive. Black rhino survive on the Lerai and Gorigor flats, lion prides are resident and well habituated, and elephant bulls with unusually heavy tusks move through the fever tree forest. Flamingo work the soda shallows of Lake Magadi when water levels suit them.
Ngorongoro is a conservation area rather than a national park, which means Maasai families continue to graze livestock on the highland rim alongside the wildlife. It is one of the few places where that coexistence is written into the law, and it shapes what you see on the drive up from Karatu.
