Zanzibar is the usual and correct answer to what to do after a safari. An hour's flight from Arusha or Kilimanjaro puts you on an island with white sand, warm water, a UNESCO-listed old town and a long, complicated history as the centre of the East African spice and slave trades.
The old quarter is a maze of coral-stone buildings, carved doors and narrow lanes, best walked slowly with a guide who can explain what you are looking at. The former slave market and Anglican cathedral built over it are difficult and worth the time.
The east coast has the best sand and strong tides; Nungwi and Kendwa in the north swim well at all states of the tide; the south-east is quieter. We will match the coast to whether you want to swim, dive, kitesurf or do nothing at all.
