Kilimanjaro — Rongai Route, 7 Days

The only approach from the north, close to the Kenyan border. Drier than the southern routes, much quieter, and the best choice if you are climbing in the rainy months.

Day by day.

  1. 1

    Moshi to Simba Camp

A long drive around the mountain to Nalemuru Gate on the northern side, then three to four hours to Simba Camp at 2,625 m.

  2. 2

    Simba to Kikelewa Camp

A steady climb through moorland with Kibo ahead, six to seven hours to Kikelewa at 3,600 m.

  3. 3

    Kikelewa to Mawenzi Tarn

A short but steep morning to Mawenzi Tarn at 4,330 m, beneath the shattered spires of Mawenzi. Afternoon acclimatisation walk.

  4. 4

    Acclimatisation at Mawenzi Tarn

A day exploring the Mawenzi basin and climbing higher before returning to sleep at the tarn. This is the day that makes the route work.

  5. 5

    Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Across the saddle to Kibo Hut at 4,700 m, five to six hours through high desert. Early dinner and bed.

  6. 6

    Summit day, then Horombo

Midnight start for Gilman's Point and Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then a long descent by the Marangu route to Horombo Hut at 3,720 m.

  7. 7

    Horombo to Marangu Gate

A steady descent to Marangu Gate, certificates, and the drive to Moshi.

Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route, 8 Days

The route we recommend most often. Eight days on Lemosho gives the best acclimatisation profile on the mountain and, with it, the highest chance of standing on Uhuru Peak.

  • The strongest acclimatisation profile we run
  • Quiet western approach through rainforest
  • Shira Plateau and the Lava Tower

Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route, 7 Days

The same scenic western approach as our eight-day Lemosho, compressed by one day. Still one of the strongest routes on the mountain if your dates are tight.

  • Scenic western approach
  • Shira Plateau crossing
  • Lava Tower climb-high day

Kilimanjaro — Machame Route, 7 Days

The Whiskey Route: steeper than Lemosho, busier, and widely considered the most scenic way up the mountain. Seven days gives it the acclimatisation it needs.

  • The most scenic standard route
  • Shira Plateau and Lava Tower
  • Barranco Wall
