Mount Meru

4,566 m, and the best preparation for Kilimanjaro.

Meru is Tanzania's second mountain and Africa's fifth, and it is badly underrated. The trek starts inside Arusha National Park, so the first day is walked among giraffe and buffalo with an armed ranger, and the summit ridge is one of the most dramatic walks in East Africa.

The knife-edge ridge

Meru's crater was blown open on its eastern side by a volcanic collapse, leaving a curved rim that narrows to a ridge walk with a 1,500 m drop into the crater on one side. The summit push begins around midnight and reaches Socialist Peak for sunrise, usually with Kilimanjaro floating above the cloud to the east.

Why climb it before Kilimanjaro

Four days on Meru gives real altitude exposure to 4,566 m, and climbers who do it before Kilimanjaro summit at noticeably higher rates. Allow a rest day in between.
