Kilimanjaro — Marangu Route, 6 Days

The only route with huts rather than tents, and the only one you ascend and descend by the same path. Six days — with the acclimatisation day at Horombo — not five.

Day by day.

  1. 1

    Moshi to Mandara Hut

Briefing and the short drive to Marangu Gate, then four to five hours through rainforest to Mandara Hut at 2,700 m.

  2. 2

    Mandara to Horombo Hut

Out of the forest into open moorland with giant lobelia, five to six hours to Horombo Hut at 3,720 m.

  3. 3

    Acclimatisation day at Horombo

A day walk towards the Mawenzi saddle at around 4,300 m, returning to sleep at Horombo. This day is why we do not sell the five-day version.

  4. 4

    Horombo to Kibo Hut

Across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, five to six hours of alpine desert to Kibo Hut at 4,700 m. Early dinner and bed.

  5. 5

    Summit day, then Horombo

A midnight start up the scree to Gilman's Point, then along the rim to Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Descend all the way to Horombo Hut.

  6. 6

    Horombo to Marangu Gate

A long, steady descent to the gate, certificates, and the drive back to Moshi.

Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route, 8 Days

The route we recommend most often. Eight days on Lemosho gives the best acclimatisation profile on the mountain and, with it, the highest chance of standing on Uhuru Peak.

  • The strongest acclimatisation profile we run
  • Quiet western approach through rainforest
  • Shira Plateau and the Lava Tower

Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route, 7 Days

The same scenic western approach as our eight-day Lemosho, compressed by one day. Still one of the strongest routes on the mountain if your dates are tight.

  • Scenic western approach
  • Shira Plateau crossing
  • Lava Tower climb-high day

Kilimanjaro — Machame Route, 7 Days

The Whiskey Route: steeper than Lemosho, busier, and widely considered the most scenic way up the mountain. Seven days gives it the acclimatisation it needs.

  • The most scenic standard route
  • Shira Plateau and Lava Tower
  • Barranco Wall
