Mount Meru — 4 Days

Africa's fifth-highest mountain, walked through a national park with an armed ranger, finishing on one of the finest summit ridges in East Africa.

Day by day.

  1. 1

    Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

We drive into Arusha National Park and walk from Momella Gate with an armed ranger, usually passing giraffe, warthog and buffalo. Four to five hours to Miriakamba Hut at 2,514 m.

  2. 2

    Miriakamba to Saddle Hut

A steeper climb through montane forest and giant heather to Saddle Hut at 3,570 m, around four hours. An afternoon walk up Little Meru at 3,801 m helps acclimatisation.

  3. 3

    Summit day, then Miriakamba

A midnight start along the crater rim — a narrow, exposed and unforgettable ridge — to Socialist Peak at 4,566 m for sunrise over Kilimanjaro. Descend to Saddle Hut for breakfast and on to Miriakamba.

  4. 4

    Miriakamba to Momella Gate

A three-hour descent by the lower forest route, with a good chance of wildlife on the way out, then the drive back to Arusha or Moshi.
