Kilimanjaro — Umbwe Route, 6 Days

The steepest and most direct way up Kilimanjaro. Spectacular, very quiet, and unforgiving on acclimatisation. We only run it for trekkers with real high-altitude experience.

Day by day.

  1. 1

    Moshi to Umbwe Cave Camp

Briefing, then a steep five-hour climb on a forest ridge to Umbwe Cave Camp at 2,940 m. The gradient starts immediately.

  2. 2

    Umbwe Cave to Barranco

A demanding day up a narrowing ridge with big drops on both sides, four to five hours to Barranco Camp at 3,960 m.

  3. 3

    Acclimatisation at Barranco

A climb towards the Lava Tower at 4,630 m and back down to sleep at Barranco. On this route the extra day is not optional.

  4. 4

    Barranco to Barafu

The Barranco Wall, then across Karanga and on to Barafu Camp at 4,673 m. Seven to eight hours.

  5. 5

    Summit day, then Mweka Camp

Midnight departure for Stella Point and Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then the descent to Mweka Camp at 3,100 m.

  6. 6

    Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

A short descent through the forest, certificates at the gate, and the drive to Moshi.

Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route, 8 Days

The route we recommend most often. Eight days on Lemosho gives the best acclimatisation profile on the mountain and, with it, the highest chance of standing on Uhuru Peak.

  • The strongest acclimatisation profile we run
  • Quiet western approach through rainforest
  • Shira Plateau and the Lava Tower

Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route, 7 Days

The same scenic western approach as our eight-day Lemosho, compressed by one day. Still one of the strongest routes on the mountain if your dates are tight.

  • Scenic western approach
  • Shira Plateau crossing
  • Lava Tower climb-high day

Kilimanjaro — Machame Route, 7 Days

The Whiskey Route: steeper than Lemosho, busier, and widely considered the most scenic way up the mountain. Seven days gives it the acclimatisation it needs.

  • The most scenic standard route
  • Shira Plateau and Lava Tower
  • Barranco Wall
