Groundwater forest under the Rift wall.
Manyara is small, green and strikingly varied: you pass from dense groundwater forest fed by springs at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, through open woodland, to the alkaline lake shore, all within a couple of hours. It works well as a half-day on the way to Ngorongoro.
The entrance road runs through tall forest where blue monkey and olive baboon troops are almost guaranteed and elephant move quietly between the fig trees. Beyond it the country opens to grassy floodplain with buffalo, giraffe and impala, and then the lake itself, often ringed with flamingo and pelican.
Manyara's lions have a well-documented habit of resting in acacia branches. It is not guaranteed on any given drive — no honest operator will promise it — but the park is one of very few places where the behaviour is regular enough to look for.
