Maasai village
The Maasai are a semi-nomadic herding people who have held on to their traditions more than most. They live in kraals arranged in a circle, fenced with acacia thorn to keep lions off the cattle — the men build the fence, the women build the houses, which are loaf-shaped and made of mud, sticks, grass and dung. We spend time with the villagers, join the singing and dancing, are shown the beadwork and ornaments, and are invited into one of the houses. Many villages welcome visitors, so this works as a day trip from Moshi or Arusha, or as a side trip on a longer itinerary — most naturally on the drive back from the Serengeti to Ngorongoro.

Day trips return to your own hotel in Moshi or Arusha the same evening. If you have not booked one yet, tell us and we will suggest somewhere in the right part of town for your pickup.
We book against availability for your dates rather than naming a property we may not be able to get you into. Your written quotation names every lodge and camp before you pay anything.

Is this staged for tourists?
The villages we use are working kraals that have chosen to receive visitors, and the money goes to the village. It is a visit, not a show, and how much you get out of it depends on how much you ask.
Can it be added to a safari instead?
Yes, and it usually is. The natural place is on the drive back from the Serengeti to Ngorongoro, where you pass several villages that welcome visitors.
Can we take photographs?
Ask first, every time. Your guide will handle the introduction and tell you what has been agreed.
