The Serengeti is the reason many people come to Tanzania, and it earns the reputation. Nearly 15,000 square kilometres of open grassland, acacia woodland and granite kopjes hold the densest concentration of large mammals left anywhere on earth. It is also the stage for the great migration, where roughly two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move in a slow clockwise loop through the ecosystem.
The migration is not an event with a date; it is a year-round circuit that follows the rain. Calving happens on the short-grass plains in the south from roughly January to March. The herds push north-west through the Western Corridor around May and June, reach the Grumeti and later the Mara River between July and September, and drift back south as the short rains arrive in November. We plan your nights around where the herds should be, not around a fixed lodge list.
Resident wildlife stays put all year. The Seronera valley in the central Serengeti holds lion prides, leopard in the riverine fig trees and cheetah on the open plains. Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, topi and a long list of raptors are reliable regardless of season, which is why a Serengeti day rarely disappoints even outside the migration months.
