Hadzabe and Datoga, on their own ground.
Lake Eyasi, south-west of Ngorongoro, is home to the Hadzabe — one of the last hunter-gatherer peoples in Africa, speaking a click language unrelated to any other — and to the Datoga, pastoralists and blacksmiths who work brass and iron by hand.
Visits start before dawn, because that is when the Hadzabe hunt. You walk with them, watch a fire started by friction in under a minute, and see bows drawn at a draw weight most visitors cannot pull. It is not a performance for a schedule; you fit around them.
Cultural tourism here can be done badly. We work with the same families over time, agree the fee before arriving, and ask before photographing anyone. If you would rather not photograph people at all, tell your guide and that is fine.
